Hutcheson, Joshua D.

Dr. Joshua (Josh) Hutcheson joined CICS in September 2012 after completing his Ph.D. in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University. His dissertation research in the Merryman Mechanobiology Laboratory focused on understanding the mechanisms of aortic valve disease progression and the identification of potential therapeutic targets. Prior to his Ph.D. work, Dr. Hutcheson received his B.S. in Chemical and Biomolecular engineering and M.S. in Chemical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he trained in the drug delivery laboratory of Dr. Mark Prausnitz.
Dr. Hutcheson is continuing to do translational research at CICS in Dr. Elena Aikawa’s group, where he is working to better understand the role of matrix vesicles in arterial calcification. Specifically, Dr. Hutcheson’s research is attempting to identify the mechanisms associated with matrix vesicle formation of microcalcifications and elucidate the resultant biomechanical changes that may lead to plaque vulnerability and thrombosis.
Dr. Hutcheson’s research has been presented at more than 20 conferences and research symposia and is the basis for two patent applications.
